Shadow Soldiers: A Layne Parrish Spy Thriller by Jim Heskett is a riveting thriller, well-crafted, and with characters you won’t easily forget. Layne Parrish is a professional assassin and there might not be many like him. But he decides to change his way of life. Now the only thing that affects him personally is his three-year-old daughter, Cameron. But then his past catches up with him when his former boss asks for his help. Layne wants to say no, but this mission involves an assassin he’s crossed paths with in the past, a ruthless killer. An innocent life is about to be taken should Layne not stop him. But does he know what he is getting into?

The beauty of this novel — and it’s in this that one finds the strength of the conflict — lies in the difficult choices the protagonist makes and the dilemma in which he finds himself, caught between his daughter and a ruthless world. The author merges the world of the child with the complications of an assassin’s life; innocence and guilt co-mingling in the same life, each begging to take the lead, to grasp the soul of the protagonist. But does he have the courage to embrace the simplicity reflected in his daughter, or should he try to hold both worlds together?

The characters are 3-dimensional and the plot is multi-layered, cleverly done and filled with action. You move from one danger to the next, unsure of what to expect. The action starts in the first chapter and I loved the fact that Jim Heskett doesn’t take long to introduce the conflict. The world building is impeccable, as is the prose, filled with plot-driven dialogue. Shadow Soldiers: A Layne Parrish Spy Thriller is delectable and engaging, an electrifying thriller.”
